Having to plug in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch just to install the most recent iOS update can be an absolute pain, especially since it can take some time. Luckily, the day where you don’t have to plug your iDevice into your computer to update its operating system might be close at hand.
9 to 5 Mac has reported that iOS 5 will feature over-the-air updates.
9to5 Mac‘s multiple sources claim that Apple has been negotiating with Verizon Wireless to provide the updates via 3G, a la most Android phones, but they refused confirm whether or not the same negotiations included AT&T.
For updates to be delivered over a wireless network, Apple will be forced to make vital change to the way iOS updates work. For example, Apple will need to utilize incremental updates over requiring users to download the entire operating system for just a few changes.
