Half Life 3 Xbox 720 Playstation 4

Could Gordon Freeman be headed to RPG territory via the Xbox 720 and Playstation 4?

I know a lot of people out there love Gordon Freeman and the Half Life series. But when people talk about what they’d like to see in the next sequel, rarely do I hear “open world” pop up in those discussions. Nevertheless, if the new rumors are to be believed, that looks like the direction Valve would like to take with Half Life 3.

The news was first picked up by the International Business Times through Jornaldugamer, a French gaming website.  According to Jornaldugamer’s “reliable source,” Half Life 3 will have open-world elements similar to recent RPG blockbusters like Skyrim and Fallout 3:

“The person close to Valve has confirmed that the development of Half-Life 3 is well under way, although much work remains. According to her, Half-Life 3 FPS will always be a very action-oriented, but with many RPG elements: open-world, quests and NPCs will be waiting for you! One of the inspirations the developers would also be the series of Elder Scrolls (Skyrim, Oblivion). This is very unexpected direction from Valve that we used to play rather linear but nevertheless excellent.”

The report also states that development on Half Life 3 was characterized as “chaotic” and has been “revived several times” due to various changes in direction and tone. The good news though is that the next Half Life game will be a completely new adventure for series protagonist Gordon Freeman and not merely “Episode 3” as some fans feared.

So when is Half Life 3 coming out and will it be available on the Xbox 720 and Playstation 4?

As of the moment, there is no official release date for Half Life 3 but according to the source, it is very likely that the game will see light of day in 2013. That release time frame suggests that Half Life 3 will probably be available on the upcoming consoles from Microsoft and Sony, the Xbox 720 and the Playstation 4.

As with all rumors, we suggest that you take this one with a grain of salt. However, the prospect of playing a new Half Life adventure with Gordon Freeman on the Xbox 720 does sound enticing. What do you think?
