According to new reports, Samsung might be working on a 6.3-inch phone called the Galaxy Mega
Just when you thought phones or “phablets” couldn’t get any bigger, it seems as though Samsung is working on a new mid-tier smartphone called the Galaxy Mega. Korea’s ET News is reporting that the phone will feature a 6.3-inch screen which will make it almost as large as many tablets on the market right now.
While the size of the phone might seem insane, the specs are far from interesting. Reports have been varying slightly but it seems as though the Galaxy Mega will have a 1.4GHz Exynos Processor, 1GB of RAM, and a 960 x 540 display. The other source getting in on the Mega rumors is SamMobile which seems to agree with ET News on everything except for the size of the screen.
According to SamMobile, the screen will only be 5.8-inches which means it will be just .3 inches larger than the Galaxy Note. Samsung is already getting ready to ship out the premium-spec’d Galaxy S4 so the likelihood of the Galaxy Mega coming out in the near future seems slim.
The issue I see with the Mega is that it would only appeal to people looking to carry around a tablet that has phone functionality. But, this phone would not even provide a high level of performance considering it will only have a 1.4GHz processor (compared to 1.9Ghz on the S4) and it will have a far lower screen resolution than the Galaxy S4.
When it comes down to it, the only true selling point of a Galaxy Mega would be its size and if SamMobile ends up being correct, then the size is not even that impressive. A phone that only separates itself from the Note by .3 inches is not some monstrous device offering a completely different user experience.
Samsung has been having major success during the past year so it is possible that they will branch out and release a Galaxy Mega just for the fun of it, but it will not be a significant device in my opinion.
