Alex: Mayan Mysteries is an iPhone game developed by Sebastian Sejud. If you want a game that’s part platformer and part Tomb Raider, this immersive little title is probably right up your alley.
In this charming little game, you play as famous adventurer Alex. You travel to the ancient Mayan City of Tikal, searching for the lost golden masks of the kings. But it turns out that the pyramids are inhabited by many creepy creatures, making your adventure all the more perilous.
As you navigate these creepy ruins, you’ll need to collect golden masks in every level. Along the way, you’ll need to watch out for poisonous spiders and other enemies.
The controls here are very responsive, though they also feel a bit floaty at times. I think this is because of the smooth, long jumps you get with each tap of the “up” button: these jumps seem to defy gravity a bit. Overall, however, the in-game physics are consistent.
For my taste, the graphics a little bit retro-looking, which is always a nice touch in my book. It seems odd to complain about a game set in a dark, dungeon-like tomb for being too dark, but I did occasionally feel like I would have liked to bump up the contrast a bit, if only to save my eyes some.
Mayan Mysteries boasts atmospheric music and charming, almost retro-style graphics. Because this game balances fun gameplay with solid controls and great ambience, Alex: Mayan Mysteries gets a Tapscape score of 8 out of 10.
