Nudity On Vine OK, Porn Not So Much

Vine is updating its terms of service to remove certain adult content deemed to be “porn” but will allow artistic nudity to remain on the video sharing site.

Nudity On Vine OK, Porn Not So MuchThe Twitter-owned site notes that although it doesn’t have anything against sexual content online, it does not want to be the source of it.

For more than 99 percent of our users, this doesn’t really change anything…For the rest: we don’t have a problem with explicit sexual content on the Internet –– we just prefer not to be the source of it. – Vine

For people that cannot determine what is considered “explicit content” for themselves, Vine has also released a short FAQ to help those people out.

What is not allowed:

  • Sex acts
  • Use of sex toys for sex acts
  • Nudity that is sexually provactive
  • Hentai and other animated pornography

What is allowed:

  • Artistic nudity
  • Nudity that is not sexual (breastfeeding)
  • Sexual content that doesn’t feature nudity

If Vine users are found to have posted sexually explicit content, their account will usually be suspended until those posts are removed. Vine also states that if a user continues to post inappropriate content, their account can be removed permanently.

In 2013, the Vine app was labelled as 17+ due to the nudity and other sexual content that is widespread on the site. However, considering that it is the internet that we are talking about, any video or photo sharing site is going to end up with “bad” content (that’s just how humans are.)

During the past year alone Vine has become one of the most popular mobile applications, and sexually suggestive content may have played a role in its success. Even a quick view of the many Vine compilations that are present on YouTube reveals that some of the most popular videos are those that are in some way sexual (yes, “twerking” is particularly common.)

Summary: A change in Vine’s terms of service will result in pornographic material no longer being allowed. However, sexually suggestive content and non-sexual nudity is still fine according to Vine. Violations will result in suspensions and if they continue, bans may also be handed out.
