It has been reported that Snap will launch a new version of their smart Spectacles this year. They also mentioned that a more advanced version with two cameras would be released in 2019. Spectacles 2.0 will come with new colours and will be water resistant as well.
The current Snap Spectacles record 10-second videos with a tap, which can then be uploaded to your Snapchat story. The product began sales in late 2016, retailing only yellow kiosks at random hotspots across USA. This gimmick paid off for them and witnessed massive crowds lining up to buy them.
The Snap Spectacles consist of a single wide-angle, almost fish-eye, camera. The Spectacles connect to your smartphone with Snapchat installed and on the tap of a button, would record a short first person view clip. The clip would then directly upload to Snapchat.
Initially, the Spectacles were sold only in the aforementioned kiosks, but since February 2017, they are available for purchase online. They don’t have any specific purpose, other than recording video clips, but they genuinely became a huge trend. Several instances of fake Spectacles came up, capitalizing on the popular trend.
