Smartphones have been wildly received here on Earth, so its not surprising NASA has found good use for the devices in its space program. Atlantis, which successfully launched yesterday, sports Android and iPhone smartphones onboard that look to make the leap into the final frontier.
“The goal is to find out how we can use telerobotics to increase the efficiency of human explorers and ground controller,” NASA employee D. W. Wheeler explained during a press event.
Android and Apple iOS device will most likely be put to work at the International Space Station that plans to stay in orbit despite a fading space shuttle program. With Android and iOS smartphones already controlling more than half of the mobile market, it only seems fitting that Google and Apple have lead the mobile charge into space.
