Egnyte (official website here) has been making inroads with Dropbox devotees for some time now. According to their website, users are currently sharing over 1 billion files daily using the Egnyte HybridCloud File Server. After scoring rave reviews from PC Mag, ITPro, and other respected insiders, here’s our take on this helpful iPhone app.
The Egnyte iPhone app provides all the capabilities of the Egnyte platform from your iPhone, allowing you to share and access your files locally or in the cloud. You can even mark certain files to allow for offline access, which is a nice touch. And of course, you can also create and edit new documents on the go (with truly stellar collaboration features.)
While Egnyte is free and signing up for an account is free, your free trial period only lasts for 15 days. After that, you do need to pony up a fair chunk of change for the service. The Group plan (for up to 5 people, 150 GB) is about $25/month, while the Office plan (which supports 10 users and 1 TB/month) is about $45. There’s also an unlimited-user Enterprise edition, but be preapred to fork over $13 per employee per month.
But with that price tag comes great security. You can expect end-to-end encryption with user-managed keys to help protect sensitive data. If you have a large office or just a constant need to access files on the go, it may be worth paying for the service.
With continuous file backup, a unified FTP solution, and change notifications when your files are modified, Egnyte is a useful iPhone app (and service) that offers tons of great features and excellent peace of mind. If you have the need for this kind of file access in your business life, Egnyte is the best app for the job.
Egnyte is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.2 or later.
