Facebook Has Purchased 'Moves' Fitness App

Facebook Has Purchased 'Moves' Fitness AppFacebook has acquired Moves, one of the more popular fitness apps for iOS and Android. The app automatically tracks certain data and allows people to add in their own records for the 60 included types of fitness that Moves has added to the application.

According to a post on Moves’ site, it will remain independent from Facebook, much like the way WhatsApp is “independent.” As a result, the data that is collected from the app’s users on iOS and Android will remain with Moves and will not end up in Facebook’s vast collection.

Now, we’re joining Facebook’s talented team to work on building and improving their products and services with a shared mission of supporting simple, efficient tools for more than a billion people.

For those of you that use the Moves app – the Moves experience will continue to operate as a standalone app, and there are no plans to change that or commingle data with Facebook. – Moves

Moves, which has millions of users, relies on a smartphone’s built-in sensors to track movement. This means that the app records movement data and can build up a log automatically for its users.

The details of the acquisition have not been shared by either company, though Facebook did release a statement confirming the deal. How Facebook will use Moves is still unknown.

Fitness tracking is a major industry now and it is continuing to grow with wearable devices and apps from a huge selection of companies. Since the potential for growth in the market is so large, it could be that Facebook simply wants to have its foot in the door and is doing so with Moves.

Facebook recently acquired–presumably for a lot more money–Oculus VR, a virtual reality headset, and WhatsApp, a messaging application for mobile phones.
