Instagram and a number of other popular web-based companies, including Pinterest and Netflix are down today following heavy storms in Virginia that knocked out their respective data centers and cloud computing services.
The outages can be traced to Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud, which hosts Instagram, Netflix and Pinterest among other sites.
Instagram posted the following tweet following an outpouring of user anger following the popular photo-sharing service going down.
A brutal heat wave is currently sweeping through the region, with temperatures spiking to 104 and resulting in many power outages and a number of deaths. Power has begun to be restored in some areas but service outages are expected to continue for some days to come.
