LinkedIn has reached one of the biggest milestones to-date, 300 million users. Last week, the social network–which is geared towards business professionals, unlike Facebook–announced that its mobile traffic had been steadily increasing as a result of a mobile push and new applications.
It is important to note that although LinkedIn may have 300 million registered users, they do not have 300 million active users. The active user figure is significantly lower at 187 million during Q4 2013. At the same time, for a social network like LinkedIn to bring in that many users is still an accomplishment.
The active user figure is slightly less important with LinkedIn as well, since many people have fully functional accounts but rarely log-on to the site because a person’s static profile is the most important area of the network. This is different from sites like Facebook and Twitter where interaction is essential and is a good measure of popularity.
Later this year, we are going to hit our mobile moment, where mobile accounts for more than 50 percent of all global traffic. Already, our members in dozens of locations including Costa Rica, Malaysia, Singapore, Sweden, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom, use LinkedIn more on their mobile devices than on their desktop computers. Every day we see an average of 15 million profile views, 1.45 million job views and 44,000 job applications in over 200 countries through mobile. – LinkedIn
LinkedIn has seen a steady increase in active users as a result of its acquisition of SlideShare–a site that allows people to share PowerPoint presentations–and the launch of the Pulse newsreader app.
Along with its announcement, LinkedIn released an infographic to show how things have changed between five years ago and now. Based upon that information, a larger percentage of the site’s users are female and the second greatest membership location is now India.
Question – Do you use LinkedIn? If so, do you login consistently or rarely?
Summary: LinkedIn has reached 300 million registered users. Its active user figure is now 187 million, which is far less than the registered statistic. Mobile use of its services is continuing to increase.
