MediaTek Helio P15 announced: Brings higher performance to phones for a cheaper price

Helio P15 will eventually succeed the now obsolete Helio P10, and MediaTek promises that it will be able to deliver more performance compared to the previous generation mobile chipset. In more than one way, you might find the Helio P15 and Helio P10 to be the exact same chipset, but according to Chinese sources, the manufacturer states that Helio P15 will be able to deliver up to 10 percent better performance compared to Helio P10.

However, both mobile chipsets have been manufactured on the 28nm architecture. This architecture does not exude efficiency, so it means that Helio P15 might not be able to contribute effectively to the smartphone’s battery as much as you would have hoped. MediaTek earlier unveiled its Helio P20 and Helio P25; both chipsets are manufactured on the 16nm FinFET architecture, so this is a clear example of how well these mobile chipsets will be able to manage the smartphone’s battery life.

Coming to the specifications, Helio P15 features an octa-core Cortex-A53 processor running at a speed of 2.20GHz. The primary difference between Helio P15 and Helio P10 is that the latter is running the same processor, but at a speed of 2.00GHz, resulting in better performance. Additionally, Helio P15 also offers a slight increase in GPU clock speed, with an ARM Mali-T860 MP2 running at 800MHz. This GPU is a weak chip, so don’t expect such earth shattering performance results as you would have hoped.

Still, Helio P15 provides support for a Cat.6 LTE modem, suggesting that affordable smartphones will be able to deliver higher download and upload speeds while connected to LTE networks. Unfortunately, this will also be dependent on the maximum speed that your LTE network is limited to. MediaTek has not provided an exact date as to when Helio P15 will appear in phones, but we should expect them to be widely available during the first quarter of 2017.
