Olive the Woolly Bugger is a Cute Kids Book for iPad

Price: $1.99     Score: 9/10     Category: Books

Olive the Woolly Bugger, developed by The Pixel Rebel, is a cute story and game combo app for iPad. In addition to playing a fun game where you feed insects to fish in a river, you and your kids can enjoy a fun story that will get readers excited about fishing, animals, and the natural world.

What’s a woolly bugger, you ask? Well, as the story explains, it’s a type of fly fishing lure. Most of the characters in the book are either some type of fly fishing lure, or some type of animal.

The story is very relatable, despite being about a bunch of fuzzy hooks: Olive the Woolly Bugger just wants to fit in with the rest of the flies at Camp Tightloops. The story unfolds, and teaches Olive and the reader about friendship.

The great thing about the text of the story in Olive the Woolly Bugger is that clicking on the underlined words or phrases opens up a new window that explains the phrase in question. You’ll learn the meaning of “woolly bugger” along with many other fish and fishing-related terms, each of which is explained with a detailed photograph or image to help illustrate the concept.

You can opt to have the story narrated to your child, or you can let you child read at their own pace. Tired of the story? There’s a mini game where you can toss insects down at fish in the water, which is surprisingly challenging in terms of aiming those insects right at the fish.

The long and short of it is this: Olive the Woolly Bugger is a great iPad story to share with your kids, particularly if you want to introduce them to your own passion of fly fishing. For kids aged 4 years and up, Olive the Woolly Bugger is as educational as it is entertaining.

Olive the Woolly Bugger is compatible with iPad. Requires iOS 4.2 or later. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this iPad app review.
