When a game looks as amazing as Osmos and begins by quoting Isaac Newton (Actioni contrariam semper et aequalem esse reactionem – for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction), you know it’s going to be good.
Developed by Hemisphere Games, Osmos for iPad is a deviantly original physics-based arcade game. In a strange kind of intergalactic come biological settting, you control a “mote”, a mesmerizing and organic looking object. The simple premise of Osmos is to collide with smaller (blue) motes to absorb them, and try and avoid the larger (red) motes which will absorb you.
You propel your mote by tapping on the screen in the opposite direction that you want to travel. Your mote ejects matter behind you (this is where Newton’s third law comes in), propelling you forward. The faster you tap, the faster you travel, but beware because ejecting matter also causes you to shrink in size.
There are two game modes in Osmos for iPad:
- Odyssey (27-level journey through the “Blobiverse”)
- Arcade (72 levels – any level at your choice of difficulty)
With mesmerizing visuals and a soothing ambient soundtrack to round out the excellent game play, Osmos for iPad is a must-have.
