The release of PlayStation 5 or PS5 was confirmed by Sony to be late this year. The first look of PS5’s design and the games that will accompany its release was finally revealed on the 11th of June during Sony’s The Future of Gaming event. Among the list of the vast and eyebrow raising games is the remake of Demon’s Souls and Horizon Forbidden West. The introduction of its design comes as a shock to many people, including the surprise introduction of the PS5 Digital Edition. This edition is an all-digital console without any need for a disc drive. This move follows the same pathway, followed by many other businesses in the gaming and gambling industry, in moving to a more digital and portable mobile platform. Many consoles manufacturers now have their eyes set on a future where physical media will be a thing of the past. Although the price of PS5 is still unknown, Sony did enough to show the world what to expect later this year when PlayStation 5 launches.
Features of PS5
Sony revealed the DualSense PS5 controller, which includes several excellent sound features such as haptic feedback, built-in mic, and adaptive triggers earlier this year. One of the DualSense controller’s standout features is that it comes with a radically different look and a space-age black-and-white color design, which is the same look of the PS5. This design is a significant step away from the design of its predecessors.
Apart from the DualSense Controller, other essential features are the specs of PS5 covered in detail during Sony’s March reveal event. The architect of Lead system Mark Cerny revealed some profound insights into the architecture of PS5 by showing the inner technical working of the PS5. The summary of the specs of PS5 includes a 16GB of GDDR6 memory, a custom RDNA 2 AMD GPU with 10.28 TFLOPs of processing power, and an AMD Zen 2-based CPU with eight cores at 3.5GHz.
Other features of PS5 include ray-tracing, a built-in 4k Blu-ray player, a super-fast SSD, and backward compatibility with many PS4 games. It could also come with a voice assistant feature that can inform you how much time is required to complete each game level. PS5, so far, is living up to its hype; however, what will make the most difference will be its games.
Surprise of two different editions of consoles
Sony didn’t fail when introducing the PS5’s console itself, revealing a few surprises that have gotten everyone ready for its lunch. PS5 will launch not with one but with two consoles, which include a slim disc-free Digital version and a 4k Blu-ray disc drive.
Both versions of consoles make uses of USB-C to charge their controllers. Also, they allow for the use of an HD camera accessory, together with a new PS5 media remote and a wireless headset. The striking design of the consoles is sure going to split opinions.
The digital edition is an attempt by Sony to move towards physical-media-free games, hoping for players to switch to streaming services and digital downloads instead of buying disc-based hardware.
Release date
Sony confirmed officially that the global release of PS5 would be just in time for Holiday 2020. This statement means that the most likely date for its release will be between October and December this year. Also, this puts its release in direct competition with that of Xbox Series X, which has the same release window. According to a leak, the release has been set to be on the 20th of November 2020, although it is not officially confirmed.
If the release date ends up being in November, this will mean that it is in line with the traditional release periods of Playstation consoles. This leaves just enough time before Christmas for people to get their orders in.
