May 2022 promises to be a spectacular month for sports, with a ton of top-class events taking place across the world.
Fans of soccer, horse racing and motorsports are particularly well catered for, while there are also some exciting golf and tennis tournaments on the horizon.
It will undoubtedly be a busy time for the top sports streaming sites as fans clamour to watch the action as it unfolds. We take a closer look at what’s on the agenda.
Soccer
Next month is a huge one for soccer as some of the top leagues and competitions in Europe reach their conclusion.
The standout event is the final of the Champions League in Paris on May 28, which could be an all-English affair between Manchester City and Liverpool.
Real Madrid may have something to say about that as the 13-time Champions League-winners still have a chance of defeating City in the second leg of their semi-final tie.
With the finals of the FA Cup, Europa Conference League and Europa League amongst a plethora of other big games in May, soccer fans have plenty to look forward to.
Horse Racing
The eyes of the horse racing world will be on North America during May as the first two legs of the Triple Crown are staged.
The prestigious Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs is first on the list on May 7, followed by the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course two weeks later.
Winning the two races would set up the possibility of a horse claiming the Triple Crown for the first time since 2018 when the Belmont Stakes is run in June.
When you factor in the Guineas Meetings in England and Ireland also take place in May, it promises to be a brilliant month for the sport.
Tennis
The French Open is the headline act during a busy month for tennis, with the world’s best players set to battle it out at Roland Garros.
Rafael Nadal is favourite to win the men’s singles title for a record 14th time, although he could have his work cut out against Novak Djokovic.
The Serbian has shown signs of a return to form after a tricky period and may be tough to beat as he attempts to defend the trophy.
The Madrid Open and Italian Open are other top tennis tournaments worth watching on live streaming services during May.
Golf
This year’s PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa promises to be a cracking tournament.
Reigning champion Phil Mickelson will not be back to defend the title, but there are plenty of players who have a genuine chance of adding their name to the roll of honour.
The set-up of the course favours players who excel with irons, and Collin Morikawa certainly fits the bill in that respect.
Morikawa won this event in 2020 before finishing tied for eight position last season. Another strong bid is on the cards this time around.
Motorsports
Motorsports fans will be in their element on the final Sunday in May as the Monaco Grand Prix and Indianapolis 500 are scheduled to take place.
The race in Monaco is one of the highlights of the Formula 1 season, with the twisting street circuit providing the drivers with a unique test.
Max Verstappen finished first in the 2021 edition of the race and will be strongly fancied to make it back-to-back victories this year.
History could be made over at the Indy 500, as Helio Castroneves is bidding to win the event for a record-breaking fifth time.
