The Alice App is an iPad app developed by Emmanuel Paletz. Designed for kids ages 6-8 or Wonderland fans of all ages, this colorful retelling of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale is pretty cool and fun to read.
There are a ton of iPad variants of the Alice tales available on the App Store. What sets this apart is its unique visual look. The Alice App contains some very cool art, as well as some interactive elements that will make the reading experience more interesting.
Some of these artistic elements may not appeal to everyone (The Mad Hatter looks just like Vladimir Putin to me, and it freaks me out.) That being said, the app does give you a unique visual experience.
In The Alice App, you can read the story silently to yourself, or you can have the story read to you. The narrator is excellent, with a lovely vocal tone, warm timbre, and crisp diction.
My biggest issue with The Alice App is the terrible sensitivity for turning the pages. I found that it takes multiple attempts in some cases to turn the pages, and you almost have to drag the pages over instead of using a simple flicking gesture.
Another gripe I had was with the sound design. I found it lacksed prceision for certain interactions, and the sound just seems to happen randomly and not in tune with specific motions of your hand.
All that being said, this app was clearly created with a lot of love. If you have always loved the Alice stories and want to experience them again as an adult (or share them with your kids), this app is one of the better options out there for iPad readers.
The Alice App requires iOS 6.0 or later. Compatible with iPad.
