The Dream of a 58 ft Catamaran

Lots of people have several dreams. Some of these dreams get fulfilled whereas some get buried forever. Likewise, the dream of Harry Lewis also was going to be buried if he wouldn’t have stood up for it. He was born with cerebral palsy and was stuck in a wheelchair for most of his life. His dream to sail through the blue water mass of the ocean was looking impossible as there were few sailboats that had the necessary facilities to facilitate the people on wheelchairs.

It was not a matter digestible for him that he required 5 people to help him to get down from the boat through the slope to the jetty. He thought the affection from these people was good, but he always wanted to do everything on his own. But to fulfill his dream, he got the 58-foot catamaran which can be accessed by any of the people with disabilities. Impossible Dream is the name of the catamaran which came to make the dream of these people true and was docked and ready to sail round Croatia. The design of the boat is such which can be accessed by any of the people in the world. This is going to be a life-changing approach for those people who wish to get on such a boat but have no way to go. The feel of fresh air and the soothing sounds of the water are now no longer a dream to many people due to this catamaran.

Only a person passing through a similar condition can understand the pain of another one. Thus the design of this catamaran was done by paraplegic designer Mike Brown. He had a dream to sail through the oceans. That’s why he thought of making such a boat that can be operated by any person in a wheelchair. Since then he started making several designs but finally in 2002, his dream became a reality. Now after some years, this boat was sold to Deborah Mellen and he with his friend Harry Horgan foundedShake-A-Leg Miami and made the operation of Impossible Dream a non-profit making project. This finally allowed lots of people with disabilities to get on such a boat to enjoy their life. The boat has a mix of crew members, one of which is a disabled person and the other is a normal one.

Those who are having any kind of disability get to ride the boat for free. The Impossible Dream is the only catamaran that was made for people with disabilities. This boat is universally accessible with both kinds of engine namely power and manual. There is a lift for them along with some extra handles throughout the boat to facilitate the disabled. The impossible dream had its first voyage from the Greenport harbor last week. There were four passengers from the east end residents with their companions. Due to the pandemic situation, the boat couldn’t operate last year but now it is ready to serve.
