Flappy Bird is gone from the App Store – probably forever – but that highly addictive, highly frustrating game has spawned a number of new iPhone games with the same game mechanic. One of the better ones we’ve seen is The Little Penguin That Could.
Developed by Fancy Mobile Solutions, The Little Penguin That Could takes the Flappy Bird gameplay style and puts a little black and white penguin in the action. Instead of flying over a Super Nintendo Mario-inspired scene, The Little Penguin That Could takes you into a world of ice and snow.
The gameplay in The Little Penguin That Could is identical to Flappy Bird. The little guy automatically flies forward but you’ve got to tap the screen to keep him up in the air. As you move forward through the level, you’ve got to guide the little penguin through the spaces in the ice walls that he encounters.
The game is incredibly challenging – just like the original. The timing required to safely pass through the obstacles is precise and whilst this is technically a ‘knock off’ – it’s just as addictive as the original.
Each time you strike out and hit one of the ice walls you get the chance to replay and start from the beginning or to continue at the cost of one snowflake. You get 3 snowflakes to start with and you can purchase more (10 at a time) for $0.99.
Since Flappy Bird isn’t available anymore, do yourself a favour and check out The Little Penguin That Could.
The Little Penguin That Could requires iOS 6.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. Follow Tapscape for reviews of all the top iPhone games.
