followColumbus (also known on the App Store as Travel journals & Travel Photos) is an iPhone app developed by BRF Solutions GmbH. This universal app is ideal for iOS users who want a clean, simple interface for collating their travel journals and travel snapshots.
Users can synchronize your travel journal with the web site www.followcolumbus.com. Users can also share photos and travel memories from the app on Facebook and Twitter.
One thing that I love: the app showcases not only your travel photos, but loads a world map as well so that you can see exactly where the photograph was taken. This feature is great if you are sharing your photos to friends, and they want to understand the geography of your trip a little bit better.
Synchronization at startup can take a few minutes, which may bore and frustrate some users. Also annoying are the banner ads at the bottom of the screen: their animated nature makes them very distracting. There are also a couple of spelling errors and odd word choices that will strike native English speakers as a bit off.
Despite a few minor annoyances here and there, followColumbus / Travel Journals & Travel Photos is a helpful tool for organizing, enjoying, and sharing your most wonderful travel memories. The interface is totally solid, with no unnecessary frills. You can also invite friends to try the app from within the interface, which is a nice touch.
The App Store is overstuffed with travel photography apps, and it is hard for one app to rise to the top of the pack and make an impact. followColumbus / Travel Journals & Travel Photos offers some great features. It’s a solid app, but lacks the sheer visual impact of many other travel-centric photography apps out there. Still, you should give it a try!
