We live in a day and age where burgeoning technology has been creating some serious issues surrounding things like “fake news”. Great amounts of misinformation circle the internet, often leaving the public uncertain of what to believe and take as fact.
VR drone racing though, believe it or not, is very real, and not only is it real but it is very quickly becoming a hugely popular hobby and sport all around the world!
A Natural Progression
When thinking of VR in terms of the common everyday person’s experience of it, so far, one might initially assume that VR drone racing must therefore be done in some sort of digitally created VR world of a game. A fun-sounding prospect in itself, and yet the reality of it is even better!
Since the very beginnings of the technology, the idea that VR could one day be used for piloting aircraft, remotely and directly, has been hot on the mind of aeronautics engineers, computer scientists, and software developers alike. After all, pilots have been flying aircraft with electronic fly-by-wire systems, with remote capabilities, and digital screens and mechanisms, for quite some time now. VR is therefore simply a natural next step, and this is especially true when it comes to drones.
Up until the recent past, drone pilots have been restricted to sitting at consoles or computers, or staring at the tiny screen of mobile devices, linked to the drones’ controls and camera. This allows for a certain adequate amount of control, enough to make it viable for practical use.
Nothing, however, could even closely compare to the actual groundbreaking implementation of fully-fledged VR piloting though. With it, an unprecedented amount of control and spatial awareness has been achieved, allowing drone pilots to fly with incredible dexterity and precision.
Next, with the drones, and various other necessary technologies involved, like video streaming, and improved signal, batteries, and cameras, becoming steadily cheaper and more widely available to the public, it was really only a matter of time.
A Spectacular New Sport
VR done racing is something that truly has to been seen to fully appreciate how incredible and spectacular, and full of potential, it really is. Many videos of people racing drones, doing amazing stunts, and just playing around, have begun to surface on online media platforms like Youtube in ever increasing amounts, and are well worth watching.
Red Bull, which has been hosting elite air-race competitions for the past twenty years has also notably become interested and is already getting involved. A recent Red Bull article on drone-racing even suggested that soon we might have special FPV, first person view, goggles allowing spectators to watch drone-racing, and various other types of live sports, from the incredibly thrilling first person perspective of the camera!
For some watching drone racing this way might be too much to handle and they may want to play online casino games instead. But for others, this might very well become the most exciting form of racing entertainment yet invented in the history of our planet!
