WeatherSnitch 2 iPhone App Review

Price: $2.99     Score: 8/10     Category: Weather

Weather apps are a dime a dozen, and it’s hard to stand out in such a crowded marketplace. But for real weather junkies, I think it’s worth splurging on WeatherSnitch 2 — Weather Forecast at a Glance, developed by Snitchware.

WeatherSnitch 2 is the high-octane version of Snitchware’s other, more lightweight weather app: WeatherSnitch. And when I say high-octane, I mean it: I’d be hard-pressed to find a single weather-related stat that the app doesn’t offer.

Beyond mere temperatures, forecasts, and moon phases, you can get data on rainfall, wind speed, visibility, wind gusts, barometric pressure (in either hectopascals or millimeters of mercury, no less.) Heck, they even measure something called radiant flux units, and even though I don’t know what that means, I love it.

Even small touches are totally perfect here: one notable example is the way the app constantly tells you the temperature outside, without actually having to launch the app (it’s visible on the icon on your home screen.)

Featuring over three million locations and over ten thousand permanent weather stations, the weather network used to power these predictions offer amazingly accurate forecasts for even the most out-of-the-way locales.

The latest version of WeatherSnitch 2 (version 2.1) is described by the developers as not “just an update, it’s a brand new app.” These features include new hand-drawn weather artwork, the enabling of social sharing of upcoming weather, a new UI, faster updates, improved accuracy, and automatic station selection.

Featuring a unique ‘twin-screen’ layout which keeps detailed forecast information and current observations visible at all times and a live home screen icon with current temperature readings that update every 15 minutes, WeatherSnitch 2 is pretty wonderful stuff.

WeatherSnitch™ 2 — Weather Forecast at a Glance is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.2 or later.
