We have never had such a great variety of apps like we do now, and we never used them so often as we did in 2020.
Almost everyone uses a mobile app once in a while, and they account for a big party of our daily routine. Be it socializing, entertainment, traveling, music, videos, even work, there is virtually an app for everyone and everything.
But while we all know Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp, Google-owned apps, or Twitter, the ranks of popularity have changed this year.
The market is only growing, the technologies are more and more innovative, and the customer behavior is dictating what is or is not in trend – or what should pop up in your device’s apps gallery.
We spend the vast majority of time on apps when using the smartphones, and that means roughly even a few hours a day. Android or iOS, doesn’t matter, the browser is off and the apps are on.
So, which are the most used apps in 2020? With your permission, we will except the big four, Facebook (along with its Messenger), YouTube, WhatsApp and Instagram, from this list, as they are leading the game still.
Instead, let’s focus on the other most popular and brilliant apps this year, as we have millions to choose from.
Here is our list:
TikTok
Contents
Along with Netflix, this one is maybe the most downloaded app in our 8 names shortlist.
TikTok is nearing one billion users, even though it was launched only in 2016. The social media and video platform had a meteoric rise in the past years, being hugely popular for youngsters. It is arguably the hottest trend regarding the video content of the year, period.
Zoom (or maybe Skype?)
We all know Skype was the undisputed conferencing apps ruler, but that changed (or so we think) this year. Surprisingly, Zoom took over in 2020. In the first half of the year, it had around 300 million daily participants. And it is used not only when working or studying from home, but sometimes even for chatting.
Netflix
If you want to catch up on the latest movies or TV series, then Netflix is your first pick. It lets you watch all sorts of videos and other original Netflix content, and the app brings your favorite movies anywhere at any time. It has several hundred million downloads so far, and it is regarded as the most popular app for entertainment.
Spotify
You want music too? Then, Spotify is the right pick for it. We dare you to come up with a better and more popular app. It has streaming services, a huge selection of music, and some of the newest hits released. It has over 160 million users and over 35 million songs.
Unibet Poker
One of the world’s most famous online sports betting operators, Unibet, launched its Poker app, on which you can play Poker Online. You can join hundreds of players worldwide, and enjoy all the features of an actual live game.
Microsoft Teams (or Google Meets?)
Microsoft Teams and Google Meets act the same: The trend has been boosted due to the millions of employees turning to work from home for an undefined period of time. While they have been popular and used also before, now you can meet your team and discuss the daily activities through these apps. For example, Teams has around 50 million daily active users. The same number of downloads has Meets.
Google Classroom
Although in the same area as Zoom, Skype, Teams and Meets, Google Classroom is used by teachers and students. It has also surpassed 50 million downloads, so it is here to stay for a long time. The app made it into top 10 most downloaded in 2020, although before 2020 it wasn’t even in top 100.
Uber
Finally, there is Uber. The app has spread in so many cities around the world, and it is the world’s leading on-demand cab service app for riders. It has more than 100 million active users in 400 cities from 70 countries. And that is how you get a popular ride!
